When Will I Get My Payout From the Australian Government?
OK now the government has got the economic stimulus package passed by the Senate the question most people seem to be asking - what will I get and, far more importantly when! After all this time of the year is expensive for many Australians as kids go back to school and many people move house as well.
There are two agencies in charge of paying out the $900 or $950 payout to Australian workers:
Centerlink Extra Payments
- The Family Bonus is a payment of $900 per family with only one main income earner. You’re eligible if you receive the Family Tax Benefit Part B and you will be paid in the period: 11 and 20 March 2009.
- Back to School Bonus is a payout of $950 per child (aged 4-18 years on 3 Feb 09). You will receive this if you are eligible for Family Tax Benefit Part A or you received a Carer Payment or Disability Support Pension and were aged less than 19 years old on 3 February 2009. You will also be paid between 11 and 20 Mar 09
- $950 payout to support farmers and businesses that have been affected by drought. It will be paid to recipients of the farming hardship benefits between 24 March and 6 April.
- The training and learning bonus of $950 will be paid to students who were eligible on the 3 Feb for the following programs:Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY Living Allowance, Sickness Allowance, Special Benefit (under age pension age), Family Tax Benefit Part A for a full-time student aged 21-24 years (inclusive) on 3 February 2009. This payment will be made between 24 March and 6 April
For more details check out Centrelink’s site
For tax payers who earned less than $100k in the tax year ended 30 June 2008 their $900 (for $80k), $600 (for between $80k and $90k) and $200 ( for between $90k and $100k) (note the ATO’s own figures have not been updated on this!) will be paid from early April - payment is from the ATO so make sure you have done your tax return and they have your current bank account details!
- When you do nothing, you feel overwhelmed and powerless. But when you get involved, you feel the sense of hope and accomplishment that comes from knowing you are working to make things better.

i get less than the required amount in a year, but i only left school and started woorking a year ago, so i havnt had to put my tax in yet. will i recieve the payment in april?
Sorry Gemina- I dont think so unless you are receiving a youth allowance or are still studying
Are you are more up to date than me pizerule - you know in NZ - you HAVE to have a bank account to get your tax back - they don’t issue checks anymore - Im amazed how many people still use checks in Australia.
My partner used to work for a a bank -that number of transactions is high but I suspect not as bad as the Dec peak! Thanks for commenting Lis
hey i just left schoool last year and i earn less than less thatn 80k.. so will i be gettting payout
hey i am a boy that just got out of school and i earn less than 80k
soo will i be getting a payout
no you won’t unless you paid tax in the 07/08 tax year !
hey i was just wondering if i get the payout i was working last year but only earnt just over a thousand but i did get a tax bak of 700 so does that mean ill get the 900 too
please let me no
No I don’t think so Renae - not from the low income criteria - if you are on youth allowance or austudy this year you will
Hey i am currently a student at monash university and completed only one semester in 2008 before putting my course under intermission (a break of 12 months), but that means i will be back studying in semester 2 this year so would i be eligibl for the student pay out?
Also do casual workers who filed a tax return recieve the payouts even though they are not full-time?
Thanks
Your eligibility as a student depends on if you were eligible for youth allowance or austudy as of early Feb 2009
The payout for tax payers doesn’t depend on whether your were casual/fulltime etc BUT if you earned less than around $11k in 07/08 tax year you probably paid no tax so WILL NOT be eligible
I’m not expert I just read the newspapers
well would i recieve the payout at the end of the tax year for low income earners?
Hi,
I filed my tax return for the year 07/08 here in Australia and i am on a work permit 457. My salary below $80K, will i get the benefit of stimulus package and how much. $900 ???
Rgds
Amit
So long as you are an Australian tax resident I think your visa status is irrelevant! If you are eligible it would $900
Hey Lis,
I am a little confused about the student payments. I am a full time student and classified as independent and eligible for payments under Youth Allowance but am not actually signed up to receive them. Will I still receive a bonus because I am eligible for the ‘payment’?
i have filed tax return for 07/08 and earnt below 80k but im on holidays overseas at the moment, will i still be eligible?
JCC - I think you’d have to have been registered in early Feb - but I am not really sure - maybe your student union can help?
Lea - yes you are eligible - you would be even if you were dead believe it or not! Presumably you still havea bank a/c in Oz to be paid into?
I’m actually studying full time at the moment, and still dependent but I’m not eligible for a youth allowance either! Do I still get this benefit?
Do you get Austudy - that would be the only other way I think you’d be eligible for the payout
hi lis, this year i have currently started an apprenticeship, also signed up for school (tafe) for my course, would that count as schooling ? would i get the payout ?
hey i was just wondering i got the $950 for my daughter who started scool this year and $900 cuz im a single parent on the pension. will i get another $900 i earned just on $1000 for 07-08 tax year
No you won’t get the final $900 because you would have needed to have earned around $11k last year to have paid tax and therefore have been eligible as a tax payer
Hey man I was just wondering I’m studying and working part time. But I was ineligible for Student Allowance because I’m a Australia citizen and haven’t been here for longer than two years. But I worked last year and made under 100k and payed taxes. Am I still eligible for the payout?
Hi.
I was just wondering if payment is to be recieved by post. When i left the country one month ago there was word that all payments would be posted and not deposited into your bank account.
Any updated info is much appreciated.
Many thanks
If you are talking about the tax payer payment everything i’ve seen is that they will pay to either the address or bank a/c they have on file for you
Cameron I am not a a citizen either and believe that we are eligbile
Hi Lis,
Ive been living overseas since october 2007, I havent filed a tax return yet. If i file a tax return, will I be eligible? I still have an Oz account. Thanks.
Did you earn more than $11k in Australia for the 07/08 year ? If not I don’t think so !
Hi
I am under 457 visa, started to work in Australia only this fiscal year (since Sep 2008). Will I be able to get the government’s stimulus package? I earn less than $80k.
KD
NO you need to earned money in Australia in the 07/08 tax year
hey im a student that does not recieve youth allowance or AUSstudy but i am currently at university and loged a tax return for under 80K in the last tax return. Will i recieve this payment and if so during which period?cheers
Im a student at college and a low income earner, i put in tax returns the last two years, i dont get youth allowance, do i get the bonus?
Hi Lis, I don’t think i am eligible for the tax payout as i earned only $6000 for 07/08 but i am a 3rd yr student but not on any centrelink payments as i earn too much but still believe i’m eligible as i’m still classified as dependent on my mum-will she receive a payout 4 me or will i get it even though i earn too much??
Ta
Me again, i paid $1000 in tax but is it that you had to have earned $11k to be eligible or to have paid more than $1000 in tax? It’s so confusing!
Hi,
I was wondering if we had to register for this pay out? I was working all last year and filed a tax return however, I dont think I registered for anything. I am also a full time student at uni
anyway help would be great
Emily your mum may get a payment for you if 18 - will she share it with you though!
You have to have PAID tax in07/08 to be eligible which is around $11k gross income for most people
If you are eligible the tax department will pay you to your bank a/c or address registered with them
heyy just wondering is there any way to get the money to go into my bank even tho i got my tax last yr by cheque?
Too late now - they are cutting checks today I believe
Just wondering if this bonus is going to affect my regular newstart allowance at all???
I don’t think so Jaana -that would be too unfair!
Ive been overseas for 2 yrs and returned back to oz mid last year.
therefore i didn’t lodge a tax return because i was in the uk for the majority of the year- although i did start work mid july 2008?
Im an australian citizen -
how do i go about investigating if im able to get the re bate ?
If you didn’t pay Australian tax and/or didn’t lodge a tax return for the 07/08 tax year you aren’t eligible I believe - check with the ATO to be sure. Thank your lucky stars you are Australian - as a Kiwi I have to pay tax at home regardless of where I work!
i just finished school and am now a student and have been working for three years and i file a tax return each year but i earn under $6000 will i still get the pay out?
No Sasha I don’t think you will as you wont have paid in tax on that low income
Hi Lis,
i have just recieved my $950 Aus Study payment and i was wondering, i work part time also and lodged a tax return last year so i will also get the $900 payment, or do i just get the 1…?
thanks for the post lis - straight to the damn point - even the actual .gov and official ATO site has this information buried deep in the respective websites. big waste of time to get answers to the questions everyone is asking.
anyone got their tax payout yet? (for the peoples who earned over 11,000 and payed tax last year)
the sunday telegraph said the payouts would be starting tonight, although they might have made a mistake. to the lucky ones - you should be getting your government tax payout tonight.
@Scott - did you earn more than $11k if yes then yes you should get the 2nd $900
@che - tell me about it -most of the news media are just as useless missing out the bit about actually paying tax to get the payout!
Haven’t seen any payment yet in my bankaccount
Didn’t receive my payment last night. Currently in a dispute with Etax Accountants who I payed to do my tax last year… bastards.
Any who - thought I’d give an update - turns out either the SDT was wrong or the ATO delayed it yet another night because they have posted now on the official website that the cash payouts are starting TONIGHT (08/04/09), not last night as I mentioned before.
Again… best of luck.
LOL just noticed that to - I doubt they are paying eveyone in one night either - the banking systems couldn’t cope! In fact the ato website says don’t call us before the middle of May! Laughing at all the retailers who had big “stimulus payments” sales scheduled for this week!
BTW neither my partner nor I received a payment yet so it may take a week or 2 is my guess
Hi I was just wandering is it true we get our payments electronically on the 6th and 7th April. it is the 9th of April now and i havent received mine as of yet. last year my tax went straight into my bank and not by mail. so will it be next week?
I don’t think anyone has got it yet - I just wrote this update post http://australia.today.com/2009/04/09/anyone-got-their-taxpayer-stimulus-payout-yet/
I was on a Working Holiday Visa until July 30th 2008 when I received my 457 visa. I paid tax in 2007/2008, filed a tax return and received a rebate.
Will I be due the $900 stimulus? I have been a Resident for Tax purposes since I began work in February 2007.
Thanks,
Cian
If you were Aussie resident I believe so - just don’t spend it until you get it!
I am confused. I earn’t 20k last year, part time work, i lodged my 07/08 tax return and got 450ish back, but paid 1300 from memory, am I going to get the $900? or is it only to people who didnt get money back and had to pay more tax?
Hi,
I’m a solo mum and received the march payout because of my 4 month old son. I’m just wondering if I will get this payout too as I put in a 2007-2008 tax return. Would they payout twice?
Thanks,
Kylie
Hi, I was on a working holiday visa working in Australia, I paid tax and received a rebate. I was not on 457 though, will this mean I am eligible to recieive a stimulus or not?
Regards
Matt
IM JUST MAD THAT A 16 YEAR OLD I KNOW WHO JUST GOES TO HIGH SCHOOL GOT 1200 FEW WEEKS AGO NOW! WHY?
i have now heard from several people that it goes by postcode and we’re up to the 4200’s. bit odd.i think. cause what if you’ve moved house since last year? i think its all too mean that our answers get ignored too!
Sorry everyone for the delay in approving comments - I’ve been away for a few days and still haven’t seen my payout either - the ATO site says don’t call before the 15 May so I guess it could be a week or two. If the postcode theory is right that’s not good for WA!
@Kim - you can get two payouts yes
@Tim - yes if you earned $20k you would have paid some tax so yes you are eligible
@Matt - ditto -yes
lis ive been hearing if we lodged a tax return last year and actually received a refund for lodging it , that we arent eligible for the $900, is that true? also i heard its going by post codes.. bcoz i saw a post earlier saying electronic refunds are getting done 1st but im pretty sure me and my mum are eligble but ive had friends get theirs by cheque we havnt received anything yet, do you know how its getting distributed?
@haylz - if you didn’t pay tax last year at all you aren’t eligible - which works out at an income of around $11k. I’ve no idea how its being distributed - but it sounds like its going to be up until mid-May for them all to go out
i earnt $ 9000 07/08 tax year and received $1000 back will i get the $900
hi, i received a payment because i am studying full time already.my gross was over $11000 last year but included income from centrelink and working, do i get $950 again?
Yes you should $900 though
I am still confused! I work part time and earn around $20,000 p/a
My hubby works for himself and gets around the same. Are we both or either of us eligible for the Rudd money?
I would say that you are both eligible so long as you have filed your tax returns for last year
Thank you for your answer. You have put a smile on my face.
Now if you can tell me when I might get it, then you are a miracle and deserve a payment from everyone that has posted you an email (except me) lol
Thanks for the thank you- few people bother! Sorry I have no idea when it will arrive LOL - I don’t work at the ATO! I do get paid for traffic to the blog but its interesting how many people ask the same questions and the official sites don’t have the answers
Hi Lis,
Just wondering if anybody in WA has got their $900 yet?? im in WA and i havnt got it yet.. and if the postcode theory is true then i could be waiting awhile, my post code begins with 6
i am overseas and i missed my payment. i am a student…ii was working part time but i was not part of centrelink. i am an aussie citizen. ddamn what do i do
Just read on a news site that the ATO have confirmed that the payments are going out in no particular order at all. They said people in the same neighbourhood may get the payments and different times aswell as people even in the same house
I expect to receive the $900 but haven’t as yet. Are others still waiting? I am in NSW. Thanks
I certainly am still waiting!
hi, my mum recieved $950 late last month (she receives my youth allowance). i’ve filed tax returns for the last few years and last year i earnt around 12k. will i also receive $900 on top of the $950? thanks
hey i am a student in year 12 i have been working for about 3 years now.last year i ernd around $6000 and i did a tax return for 08.will i get the $900??
hi i heard that anyone who earned under $11,000 last year arent getting the bonus payout! even though i paid tax last year. Do i get the bonus payout?
@Ryan yes I think you will get the low earner tax payer $900 too
@ben - it depends on whether you paid tax …
@Alex correct because you shouldn’t have paid tax at that amount -well you would have paid it but got it all back in your refund at the time
Hello,
I filed a tax return in 2007-2008, received less than $80,000, and my bank account details were registered, and I did receive my refund back to my bank account directly, but I haven’t received the $900 yet. Are they still processing payments?
Hi i worked last year and my refund was taken instantly from family tax i didn’t see a cent of it as they said i owed the family tax, i paid a low income tax offset of about 240.00 i dont know what that means, but am i elligible for the 900.00 . Jenny
Is the Australian Government giving out payments to Australian’s currently residing overseas? I didn’t have time to read this article but i just noticed the headline over someone’s shoulder (don’t even know what the publication was) but the heading said… ‘Australian government payouts to Australians living overseas’.
Is this true? Do you know where i would find more information?
Reading through some of the replies on this website seems that you have to have lodged a tax return in Australia for 07/08 to be eligible but i doubt that anybody living overseas would have done this so maybe there is some other payment for residents overseas?
Thanks,
Aisha.
