Low Income Earners Miss Out On $950 Payout

Published by Lis Sowerbutts at 11:04 am under Australia News Edit This

OK the bottom line is that to receive the $950 payout for tax payers who earned less that $100k in the 07/08 tax year - you have to fulfill two main criteria.

  • you have to have lodged your 07/08 tax return which is over due anyway. You have until June 30 so get your sh**t together and do that
  • you have to have paid tax in the 07/08 year

The second point will discount some people who have earned a very low income, probably from a part time job or only worked part of the year. The bottom line is that if you income was less than $11,000 last year you probably won’t get the $950 payout. In reality you have had it already - because anyone who earns less than $6000 pays no tax in Australia and those of you who earn a little more will have got the $750 rebate for low income earners anyway!

And don’t whinge - the tax system in Australia is very generous to low income earners be they students who worked part time or others with part time jobs. New Zealanders pay 15c in the dollar for all their income earned from the first $1!

So if you earned less than $11,000 last tax year you probably won’t get the $950 payout

How does this get paid out? Will it automatically go into your bank account, like your tax refund at the time?

Hi Winston - if you get a refund because of your income it will go into the same a/c that you got your last tax refund. The other payouts will be paid via centrelink The payments will come april/may if they pass the legislation soon

So under 11k. you dont receive the 950 bonus. Would that include work and a centrelink payment combined only only based on work tax.

No the under $11k is only for your tax return last year - I believe you could still get the family benefit or student and other centerlink payment related payment - which is now reduced to $900

    Hi,
I was given this 1300 686 636 number to ring (which i rang last week) and i was told that once i have rung this number and followed the prompts the $950 would be deposited into my account within the next three weeks. (before the end of march)
    Is this correct?

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be! I don’t work for Centrelink or the ATO- I just put some interesting info on my website :-) It sounds like you are in line for a centrelink payout (950 not 900) and given that they already have all your details - bank a/c etc - that should be sweet!

I’m a low income earner, and will be getting the payment for that, but is there a seperate one available for students on youth allowance?

I wasn’t expecting to receive a double amount, but for some reason my mum said i might get it because I payed tax 07-08 and now i’m unemployed and with centrelink….?

Your mum might be right. if you were elegible for youth allowance on the 3 Feb 08 you get that payment. If you also earned less than $80k last tax year (but more than about 11k ie actually paid tax) then you may well get that payout too - though that one won’t come until April. Just don’t spend in advance on my say so!

Not from the ATO re low pay - you might get something from centrelink if you were on Austudy or youth allowance in early Feb

If I am a Permanent Resident but not citizen, do I still get the pay out if i earned more that 11k last year ?

Yes you will -unlike voting - so long as you were legally working in the country and filed a tax return you get the payout.
